The Convenience of Insulated Composite Gloves in Electrical Safety.

When working with electrical equipment, safety is critical. Traditionally, the three-glove system has been the go-to for many workers. This system, based on the ASTM D120 standard, involves wearing three layers: a cotton inner glove, a rubber insulating glove, and a leather outer glove for mechanical protection. While this method is effective, it can be bulky, reducing dexterity, especially in certain working environments.

The development of composite gloves, driven by the IEC 60903 standard, has offered an alternative. Composite gloves combine the essential protective features of the three-glove system into a single glove. These gloves provide:

  1. Insulation properties to protect against electrical shocks.
  2. Mechanical protection against wear and tear.
  3. Arc flash protection.
  4. Chemical resistance to protect against oil, acid, and other harsh substances.

Why Composite Gloves?

Though slightly thicker than rubber gloves, composite gloves can offer better dexterity. The three-glove system, which includes a cotton inner, rubber glove, and leather outer, can feel bulky. Composite gloves eliminate this bulk, allowing workers to move their hands more freely, making them ideal for precision tasks.

Dexterity is especially important when working in confined spaces like EV/hybrid engines or underground pits. In these situations, the leather outer glove in the three-glove system can become wet and slippery, making it harder to handle tools. Composite gloves, on the other hand, maintain their grip in wet or muddy conditions, ensuring safety and performance in challenging environments.

The Rise of Composite Gloves

Whilst Honeywell has discontinued its composite gloves,  Catu and Raychem’s range continues to offer all the benefits electrical workers need in today’s environments in a single glove.

In summary, while the three-glove system is still an excellent and safe option, composite gloves are preferred in scenarios where greater dexterity, convenience, and performance in tight and/or wet spaces are needed.
